Hope and Fear

What do you do
When you’re afraid of hope?
When you’ve become used to the pain
And have found ways to cope?

How do you react
When you hear there’s a way?
To be freed from your chains
To be healed from the pain?

How do you move forward
When you know you might fall back?
And feel that sinking feeling
When you fall into another trap?

What if it is easier
To pretend there’s no Promised Land at all?
To pretend freedom doesn’t exist
To avoid the pain of the fall?

It takes a new bravery
To come back into the fight
When you’ve lost so many times
When the lies seem to be right

Lord, give me the courage
To try it once again
Help me to learn
From the past seasons of pain

So that every failure
Helps form the bridge to success
Each wound and bruise
Form into toughened flesh

There is a way out
Persistence is the key
Keep hitting against that wall
It’ll fall, you’ll see

And hope’s light will burst through
No longer just glimpses through a crack
You will enter your Promised Land
And you will never go back
