Whispering Snakes

Shameful whisperings
Encircle like hissing snakes
Corrode my belief
And undermine my faith

They sing in my dreams
A spiteful tune of woe
They slither under my skin
They go everywhere I go

These snakes bind my hands
And wrap around my neck
They warn me never to speak
Or my life they will wreck

But I did say a word
That made them shudder
A powerful truth
They had urged me not to utter

My fractured past
Is not to be hidden
It is not to be buried
Or to be left unwritten

My failure is the contrast
That makes His glory shine brighter
When pride sneaks in
It is an essential reminder

And as I step forward
To heights I thought I was barred
Everyone’s attention is drawn
To the One who was eternally scarred

The One who takes the blame
For the sum total of my mistakes
Who took them to the cross
Along with those snakes

His death
Now gives me the right
To banish these snakes
And to go on living my life
