Facing Disappointment

A crushing darkness
All around
A bone-chilling silence
That smothers all sound

This is what life is like
After so many rounds of despair
The sharpest of agonies
Is that of a soul rent bare

It darkens your mind
Darkens your very soul
It sucks the joy out of everything
Erodes your drive towards your goals

Disappointment haunts my lodgings
Stalking me like a ghost
Its hissing slither into my dreams
They follow me wherever I go

They slowly bind me in chains
Tie me up against a post
I hear their laughter at my struggles
To hold on to the things I want most

But in the disappointment
I see a light
A truth revealed to me
In my darkest of nights

True joy is not in achievement
Nor in getting everything you desire
Pursuing happiness is elusive
It has a trillion places to hide

But when you sit back
And look at the little you possess
Contentment will find you
Remind you that you are truly blessed

From the meagreness around you
You can extract much joy
Though Disappointment tries to spoil it
It finds this joy, it cannot destroy

And a burnishing, bright light
Will alight in your soul
Bringing warmth and comfort
As you still go after your goals
