Self-condemnation
Self-lashing
Internal cruelness
Relentless bashing

We spew harsh words
In hope they lead to change
But the agony of self-blame
Leads us to fall again

We have been taught
That only fear or guilt can motivate
And yet the reality is
They can’t free, only incarcerate

We do just enough
To ease the burden on our souls
But that will never be enough
To make us healed and whole

Only hope gives the energy
Required to finish this marathon
Only compassion picks us up
When all our strength is gone

Shame and guilt
Only add to the weight
It takes true forgiveness
To break these chains
