A lament
Depression is like
Being trapped in a valley
Caught between the clashes
Of two charging armies
Too tired to focus
But unable to sleep
Too sad to do anything
But unable to grieve
Yearning to do
The things that you love
But your mind is too overwhelmed
To even pick a pen up
Things that usually bring a smile
Now bore you stiff
So you turn to things you hate
To give your mood a lift
Lying on a sofa
Too exhausted to get up
But your mind won’t stop thinking
Won’t shut the pain off
So you become a shadow
Crawling in the dark
Grasping for slippery handles
Trying desperately to get up
And then as night falls
And the pain begins to recede
Then comes the ordeal
Of trying to fall asleep
And when you have wrestled
Those short hours away
You lift up your heavy eyelids
To do it all again
