Anxiety’s Equations

Anxiety is like a
Flustered mathematician
A self-appointed professor
Who can’t do simple addition

He spends his days
Scribbling complex equations
But he still has yet to master
The basics of calculation

He stares in panic
At his cluttered chalkboard
He is bewildered by his own working
But of one thing he is sure

The world will end
Yes, it is true
In a violent, sudden act
And there is nothing we can do

But when I looked at
The equations he had written
They were nonsensical
And full of contradictions

I had thought him a menace
A master manipulator
But he is just a bumbling idiot
Who should stick to a calculator

Now when he runs
Flapping his papers of proof
I laugh as I go through them
And mock his apocalyptic news

Instead I look deeper
Beyond that feeling of fear
I do what I must do
Asking the Lord to draw near

Ask Him to show me
The right steps I should take
And then I take off in a sprint
Leaving Anxiety in my wake
