Have you ever had that feeling
That horrible sensation?
That sense of dread
When things seem to be changing?
When you take a step forward
And the ground doesn’t collapse?
When you step out of the cage
And don’t get caught in a trap?
When you begin to realise
That all you ever wanted
Is within your grasp
Just moments from being granted?
But you’ve been here before
And it went wrong last time
It was another false dawn
Another failed sunrise
That brief glimpse of light
Made the disappointment all the more terrible
That reminder of the scenery
Made the darkness all the more unbearable
How do you know
If this time it is for real?
How do you know
If this time you will heal?
But you need to realise
There are no false dawns
These are a series of battles
In a drawn-out war
Every advance
Of the wave of light
Damages the darkness
Makes its grip less tight
And suddenly one day
This castle of dark will fall
Its foundations will break
And so will its walls
And you will see
That every false dawn
Was part of the process
In winning the war
False Dawns
