Don’t Pity Me

A lament

I don’t need your pity
Your kind, empty words
My pain is rotting meat
Your words, tasteless herbs

Don’t deflect, don’t divert
The blood-stained flows of my heart
If it is too much for you to bear
Please don’t bother to ask

I don’t want people
To feel sorry for me
To gawp at my pain
And shower me with sympathy

I am looking for people
Who can look my pain in the eye
Who won’t run away
Who will stand by my side

If that is too much for you
Then please don’t pretend
Don’t ask to join this journey
If you are not prepared to stay until the end

I’d rather be alone
Then get my heart broken again
By fair-weather friends
Who never meant what they said

So think twice
Before you offer to reach out
I wrote all these poems
So you know what this journey is about
