I used to be a reader
A book devourer
That ancient being
From which words cower
I would consume tomes
In one fell swoop
During the day or the night
Well done or uncooked
I was a realm traveller
Entering endless domains
From fantastical lands
To the far reaches of space
All that was taken
By this terrible condition
That made my mind wilt
To be unable to listen
Now when I read
I don’t see worlds
I see boring black letters
Meaningless swirls
I am a marooned bird
With my wings clipped
A rotting wreckage
Once a magnificent ship
Oh, how I long
For my mind to work again
For it to be free
This darkness to transcend
I won’t give up
I will continue the fight
I will return to my travels
Once again, I will take flight
I Once Was a Reader
