Buried

I tried to bury
My pain with purpose
Until my strength was consumed
By a pitiless furnace

My body was worn down
Until there were only scraps
So that a gnarled skeleton
Was all that I had

I dragged myself on
Through more and more misery
Too afraid to face
The pain inside of me

Now here I am
My tongue parched and dry
Muscles dwindling
Vultures circling in the sky

And yet this pain
Is still here
And I realise now
That I must face my fear
