Disappointment

Black pills gleaming
Time for the daily dose
Thrashing in the water
Its vapours form thick smoke

I know its taste
Its bitter afterburn
The spasms in the stomach
As it begins to churn

Two steps forward
Three steps back
I know the rhythm
And pattern of this dance

Time has conditioned me
Steeled me to the pain
The bitterness is familiar
What I fear now is change

To taste hope’s freshness
On the tip of my tongue
To feel that yearning rise
Suppressed since I was young

Help me to be brave
To chase hope’s light
To take a step forward
And to risk disappointment’s spite
