Locked Inside

I built a cage
From the strongest steel
To lock away memories
To pretend they weren’t real

I accepted the secrecy
Of hidden pain
Rather than endure
The agony of change

I suffered in silence
In this bath of hot oil
My insides melting
From this toxic toil

So I built a new cage
From a kinder steel
And I locked away my shame
So that I could heal
